Introduction

Many people believe that when a person dies and is buried in a grave, they simply become one with the soil and cease to exist forever. However, this is a dangerous misconception. The reality is that after death, a person enters a new life known as "Barzakh" or the period of waiting between death and the Day of Judgment.
The Encounter with the Grave
When a person dies and is taken to the grave, the first thing they encounter is the tightness of the grave. The concept of the grave is described vividly by Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that when he would stand near a grave, it felt as if his beard would be crushed. He was once asked why he cried so much when the mention of Paradise and Hellfire was made. He replied that he had heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) say that the grave is the first stage of the afterlife. If a person is successful in this stage, the subsequent stages will be easier. Conversely, if a person fails this stage, the subsequent stages will be more difficult.
The Day of Judgment
After being buried, people will be gathered in the field of Resurrection. Allah will hold each individual accountable according to their deeds. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that on the Day of Judgment, people will gather in the field of Resurrection, and when Allah looks towards them, their deeds will be presented before them. Their family, wealth, and knowledge will return to them, and only their deeds will remain. Allah will then judge them according to their actions.
The Reckoning
On the Day of Judgment, each person's actions will be examined in detail. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that people will be gathered barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised. Three groups of people will walk differently: some will walk on foot, some on their hands, and some on their faces. The Prophet (peace be upon him) pointed towards his mouth, indicating that some people will be raised with sweat pouring down their faces. The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said that people will be accountable for every single prayer, and if their prayers are found to be lacking, Allah will ask if they have any voluntary prayers. If they do, the deficiency in the obligatory prayers will be made up with the voluntary prayers.
The Accounting
On the Day of Judgment, the people will be gathered and presented with their deeds. Allah will examine their actions and intentions. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that Allah will hold a person accountable for how they earned their wealth and how they spent it. He will also examine their knowledge and how they acted upon it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised his followers to be prepared for this day and to engage in righteous actions and good deeds.
Conclusion
It is crucial to understand that death is not the end of our existence. Rather, it is the beginning of a new life in the grave, which will ultimately lead to the Day of Judgment. We will be held accountable for our actions and deeds, and only our righteous actions will benefit us in the Hereafter. Therefore, it is essential to strive for righteousness and good deeds in this life to ensure success in the next. May Allah guide us all on the straight path and grant us paradise in the afterlife.
